Somerville Pantry Dec 14
Stopping by our Food Pantry in Somerville this morning, it was no surprise to see our volunteers busily taking care of those in need. It was a particularly busy morning because, as one of the volunteers stated, “it always gets busier at the end of the month when the food stamp money runs out.” That is true except, of course, today is only the 18th, hardly the end of the month.
There were at least 3 new applications received today from individuals who needed food assistance. More than normal, on any given day.
What was most heart wrenching was hearing about the practice, for those arriving very early, of tying their shopping bags to the railing outside the church to hold their place in line. These people have a palpable fear of “missing out” if we were to run out of food, which fortunately has never happened. Yet the fear is real and if there is no other option, arriving very early and tying a bag to a rail become a fact of life.
So many people care and contribute to the success of helping to meet the needs of the community. Now, more than ever, your help is needed and most appreciated.
